Baltimore Visitors Center
Baltimore, MD (December 8, 2016) – These are exciting times at Wohlsen Construction Company. After a year of reflection, commemoration and celebration to mark their 125th anniversary in 2015, Wohlsen entered 2016 on a wave of unprecedented growth with recently established offices in Westport, Connecticut; Parsippany, New Jersey; and here in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1890 by Herman Wohlsen in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Wohlsen started as a family-owned general contractor and has evolved, under the leadership of Gary Langmuir, CEO, into one of the leading Construction Manager / General Contractors in the Mid-Atlantic States.
Wohlsen has been providing construction services in Baltimore and Maryland since 1978. School construction made up a large part of their local resume in the 1980’s. The next two decades provided opportunities for dozens of projects that reflected the full spectrum of their capabilities–healthcare, senior living, higher education, manufacturing and distribution, among others. With the establishment of the Baltimore office in 2013, a deeper commitment was made to offer construction services in Charm City and Maryland. In the city, they are currently working on a pathology lab for the University of Maryland Medical Center and the second phase of the Visitor Center Renovations in the Inner Harbor. The balance of their current work finds them in Baltimore, Cecil, Anne Arundel, Calvert and Worchester counties, as well as in Fairfax County, Virginia. Their work on last year’s Baltimore Visitor Center renovations garnered them, and the architectural firm of Ayers Saint Gross, a “Best Project” award from Engineering News Record.
Leading the effort in Baltimore is Dave Brodie, Senior Vice President and Steve Davies, Vice President of Operations. Dave joined the firm in 1982 and was responsible for establishing and managing Wohlsen’s highly successful Delaware office. Steve Davies brings 39 years of construction experience to the team, including holding a similar position with a prominent Baltimore developer.
In keeping with Wohlsen’s practice of an organic approach to expansion, Dave Brodie moved to Baltimore and quickly began forming a group of high powered professionals, teaming veteran Wohlsen personnel with local talent to create a lineup that features the benefits of long standing local relationships as well as a familiarity with the “Wohlsen Way”. After quickly outgrowing their original offices in Canton, they have now set up shop in the historic, vibrant Sharp-Leadenhall neighborhood near Federal Hill in South Baltimore.
While they did not exactly start from scratch – they have worked over the years with many of the leading architectural firms and many of the familiar names in Baltimore – the excitement of establishing a new home, developing new relationships and growing an outstanding Baltimore team has Wohlsen looking with enthusiasm towards 2017 and the opportunity to provide, as their vision statement reads, “A relentless pursuit of excellence, service and results for our clients.”
