On October 23, the AIA Baltimore Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) hosted a design symposium focused on special education. Here is who spoke and what was covered:
Cathy Purple Cherry, AIA – Purple Cherry Architects
Cathy shared personal experience as a parent of child with special needs and gave an overview of funding resources for those with disabilities in the State of Maryland. She works as special education consultant on educational and group living projects and shared three projects: Hartsvigsen School, Pilot School, and Benedectine residence.

Chris Parts, AIA – Hord Coplan Macht, Inc.
Chris presented several projects that create spaces and services to support experiential learning opportunities for students with disabilities who are transitioning out of traditional learning environments. His presentation covered the challenges of this transitional time and the role of design in special needs education.

Lauren Myatt, AIA – Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects
Lauren detailed a programming exercise with Change, Inc.—an existing facility in Carroll County that provides day time care for individuals with disabilities. Her presentation covered the nuances of funding, project focus groups’ feedback, and meeting the centers programmatic needs going forward.
