August 2020 Presidents Letter: The Center for Architecture and Design

The Center for Architecture and Design

The first leg of our long and winding journey is just about complete. After years of debate about creating a Center for Architecture, three years ago AIA Baltimore created a committee to examine different buildings across Baltimore to do just that. Last year we selected One Charles Center as our new home. Quickly following this decision came an RFP, design competition, design and permitting, Covid-19 delays and steady construction processes.

With the launch of Doors Open Baltimore and Baltimore Architecture Month, we will be hosting a Virtual Ribbon-Cutting and Tour on October 2nd, 2020.  Please stay tuned for more details and registration.

The Baltimore Center for Architecture and Design was conceived to scale the influence of Architecture and Design. The Center will be where neighbors, civic leaders, institutions, and all design professions come together to collaborate, inspire, learn, listen, and most importantly, to act. Here we hope to find common values and work towards shared goals. The Center will celebrate Baltimore’s architectural treasures, both new and old. Finally, the Center will be a platform for discussing the future of design and the profession.

To help accomplish these goals, today we start our next ambitious journey.

The Center Fund.

Our goal is to raise $1,000,000. The Center Fund has been seeded with $500,000 from the hard work and financial responsibility of the members and former leaders of AIA Baltimore. These funds and the interest earned from them will be invested directly to cover the costs of design and construction of the Center, the Center’s operations, and the programs we will provide.

Your support will allow us to develop innovative new programs at the Center for our members and the public.

Your donations will allow us to curate unparalleled exhibitions on the built environment. The Center will be a place where designers can gather and network, students can participate in STEM workshops, and where all Baltimoreans can engage and learn something new about our city.

Your donations will help us convene important conversations about architecture, equity, diversity and inclusion, and the role of design in shaping our lives.

I, and AIA Baltimore are aware that today is not the ideal time to start The Center Fund. We know that the pandemic-induced economic recession is being felt by our membership and it will likely get worse before it gets better. However, we believe in the critical importance of The Center for Architecture and Design’s mission, which The Center Fund supports. It is this mission of action to serve our members, our profession and our city for which we ask for your donation. Please see more information on the vital impact your donation will make as an Individual or Corporate Sponsor.
