Kathleen Starghill-Sherrill, AIA, NOMA, NCARB, LEED AP received her B.S in Urban Planning from Towson University in 1992 and her M. Arch from Morgan State University in 1997. Starghill-Sherrill worked in a variety of architectural positions until 2003 when sheand Mahendra Parekh (2006 AIA Baltimore president) began an architectural practice together which would become SP Arch Inc. in 2005. Parekh retired from practice in 2008, leaving Starghill-Sherrill to manage and expand the firm. Starghill-Sherrill incorporated landscape architecture into the firm and was awarded a Top 100 Minority Business Enterprises award in the Mid-Atlantic Region in 2011. Also in 2011, Morgan State University’s School of Architecture and Planning bestowed the Outstanding Alumni award to Starghill-Sherrill. For a decade from 2011 until April 2021, Starghill-Sherrill worked as an adjunct professor at Morgan State University, teaching a variety of courses in the School of Architecture and Planning. Starghill-Sherrill became the first African American to serve as president of AIA Baltimore in 2012 and as president of AIA Maryland in 2016. Starghill-Sherrill also founded AIA Baltimore’s Women in Architecture Committee, now the Equity Committee. She helped establish the Baltimore Chapter of National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) in 2017 and served as the first president of the organization. Starghill-Sherrill remains active in Baltimore with her firm SP Arch.
