Board Spotlight: Madhuri Subramaniam, AIA

What has your experience on the AIA Baltimore board meant to you? This is my second time returning to the AIA Baltimore board. I was an Associate Director from 2008-09; currently on the AIA board as a Director since 2019. The experience has been nothing but rewarding. AIA Baltimore is among the first few local chapters to celebrate 150 years. I am delighted and honored to be a part of the board as we celebrate this special milestone birthday.

What has been the biggest benefit to your participation on the board? As a board member, you’re not just representing yourself and/or your firm; but the AIA Baltimore Chapter at various events. You’ll get the opportunity to network with local and national chapter leaders, hear about the policies changes and initiatives, and the opportunity to cast your vote to elect the representatives of our State and National AIA board. Most importantly, you’ll hear about all the local advocacy efforts that are happening in the city with a prospect to participate at various levels; it gives me immense pride to be a part of the leaders who bring the change in our profession.

What have you learned about Baltimore’s architecture community, and issues of practice? As a non-native of Baltimore, I was introduced to the chapter as place to meet local architects, designers, and industry professionals. The AIA Baltimore chapter house provided the platform to learn about the vast and diverse history of Baltimore, gain architectural vocabulary, and an introduction architectural community, or what I now call the “extended family”. As an architect working for a large A/E firm, we seldom hear about the many urban design programs, new design award winners, or the work and issues that are being addressed by the various chapter committees. Being an AIA Baltimore board member gives you the unique opportunity to connect, advocate, share, and grow as a professional.
