SUMMARY:Maryland Club Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Maryland Club formed in 1857\, when workboats\, sailing ships\, and steamboats jammed Baltimore harbor. Political parties frequently met here to nominate candidates for President\, and citizens proudly referred to the place as “the monumental city.” After the Civil War\, as the club flourished\, and the city expanded northward\, the governors purchased a vacant lot on the southeast corner of Charles and Eager streets and made plans for a new club house. The lead architect\, Josias Pennington of the local firm Baldwin and Pennington\, had much experience designing B&O Railroad stations. His Romanesque building in the style of Henry Hobson Richardson made heavy use of Baltimore-County white marble and formally opened on New Year’s Day\, 1892. \nThe tour will offer a rare chance to see inside the historic Maryland Club. After a disastrous fire in 1995\, club leadership elected not simply to repair the Eager Street building but to restore it– refinishing floors and paneling\, repainting walls\, and rethinking the arrangement of prints\, paintings\, and trophies.  Just off the main foyer you will discover the former lounge area that was transformed into a casual restaurant and bar area\, thoughtfully designed by SM+P Architects with curated art selections from the club’s existing collections. In addition\, the tour will include the 2018 modern addition to the club that contain its world class squash and fitness facilities\, locker/shower rooms\, and pro shop. \nRegister here to join the tour.

SUMMARY:Best Products “Tilt” Showroom (Doors Open Baltimore)
DESCRIPTION:OCT 28.  |  5:00 – 5:30 PM\nBest Products “Tilt” Showroom \nSuggested Donation: $10 \nThis presentation will dive into the history of the Best Products “Tilt” Showroom\, a lost post-modern landmark in the suburbs of Baltimore. The building opened its doors in October of 1978 in the Eudowood Plaza shopping center in Towson and immediately drew praise\, criticism and crowds of curious shoppers. This eye-popping architectural illusion was more than just a publicity gimmick; it was a surrealist-inspired work of art that sought to fuse public sculpture and architecture. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Eutaw Farm and the Creation of Northeast Baltimore - (Offering In-Person AND Virtual Experience)
DESCRIPTION:Archaeologists Jason Shellenhamer and Lisa Kraus will share the results of their six-years of field work and research in Herring Run Park\, which has uncovered the remains of one of Baltimore’s largely forgotten great estates\, Eutaw Farm. Like most of Baltimore’s homes of the rich (and sometimes famous)\, including the Carrolls of Homewood and the Garretts of Evergreen\, the history of Eutaw speaks to a wealthy white family’s rise and fall. But the archaeology of Eutaw Farm also reveals remarkable and astonishing stories about the development of Northeast Baltimore and the founding families of Baltimore\, those you may have heard of and those whose stories have never before been told. \nPLEASE NOTE: This HYPRID IN-PERSON + VIrtual EVENT is part of Doors Open Baltimore\, a citywide festival of architecture and neighborhoods sponsored by the Baltimore Architecture Foundation. If you have opted for a virtual ticket\, you will receive a Zoom link closer to the event. \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nLisa Kraus (Ph.D.\, University of Texas at Austin) and Jason Shellenhamer (M.A.A.\, University of Maryland) are professional archaeologists with a combined 40 years of experience in historical archaeology. They are also the co-directors of the Herring Run Archaeology Project\, a free\, community-based archaeology program in Baltimore City. Since 2015\, they have conducted excavations\, research\, and public outreach at the Eutaw Farm site in Herring Run Park and the Ship Caulkers’ Houses in Fells Point. \nREGISTER FOR A VIRTUAL TICKET \nREGISTER FOR A IN-PERSON TICKET

Some are modest\, simple structures\, some are grander\, and probably all of them have been ignored when we think about Baltimore’s architectural heritage. If we stop to look at them\, however\, we see the evidence of Baltimore’s spatial and population growth in the years before the Civil War. They tell a tale of geographic and social mobility\, changing tastes\, and even theological change. You can see all this\, if you know what you’re looking at. \nMichael S. Franch\, Ph.D.\, is a historian\, board member and past president of the Baltimore City Historical Society\, He is especially interested in Baltimore urban growth and religious community in the early 19th century. \nView all Doors Open Baltimore programs at www.doorsopenbaltimore.org \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Decoding Baltimore's Modernist Religious Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of Doors Open Baltimore 2020 Spiritual & Ritual Week\n\n\n\nPresented as part of Doors Open Baltimore Spiritual Week \nThis program is hosted on Zoom and Facebook Live. Upon registering you will receive an email confirmation and a Zoom link. If you do not receive a link\, please contact ndennies@aiabalt.com. If you do not contact us at least 1 hour prior to the start of the program\, we cannot guarantee admittance. \nAmong the innovations of American sacred architecture after World War II was an interrogation of the decorative arts’ role both in religious life and in architecture itself. One common approach used by architects around the country can be defined as “Opticalism\,” a neologism that denotes the deployment of aggressive and large-scale visual effects within spaces of worship. Opticalism represented a semiotic innovation\, having to do with attenuating the relationship between sign and symbol. \nArchitect Jeremy Kargon will present three local religious buildings\, completed between 1954 and 1963\, that illustrate Opticalism’s characteristics: Church of the Redeemer (Pietro Belluschi\, Architect with Rogers\, Taliaferro\, and Lamb); Har Sinai Congregation (Buckler\, Fenhagen\, Meyer\, and Ayers\, Architects); and St. Paul’s Lutheran Evangelical Church (Charles Stade\, Architect). In these buildings\, religious imagery was displaced within worship spaces by the use of exaggerated optical effect. No longer merely situated within architecture\, artwork itself defined the spatial precinct of each building’s sacred rites. \nTickets are donation based. From her childhood\, being dragged from church to church with her parents\, to the present day\, working on a project of documenting historic brick churches along the Chesapeake Bay she still love old churches. While there are major churches that everyone knows in Baltimore like the Basilica or Old St. Paul’s\, there are many hundreds more that are not noticed. She has scoured the city\, hunting up these old churches to share them with you. Most are within the Baltimore City limits\, but a few are just outside of the city. \nTickets are donation based.
