Helpful Strategies for Emerging Professionals During a Stay at Home Directive

AIA Baltimore Emerging Professionals committee would like to share some tips geared towards Associate Members during this period. There’s tremendous uncertainty surrounding this pandemic; however, Membership in AIA binds our community together – connecting with your colleagues during these troubling times can help.

Now that you’re not commuting to the office, consider using this time saved to prioritize your professional development. In fact, this could be an excellent opportunity to begin prepping for the Architecture Registration Exam (ARE). And, students and soon-to-be grads could use the lull in extracurricular activities to assemble all those sketches and class projects and spruce up your portfolio, this will give you a head start once the job market speeds up. Likewise, don’t lose sight of the long-term goals. Having a plan will help you stay in the game. Here are some free offers you should definitely check out!

Both AIA ArchiPrep and Pluralsight are offering FREE ARE courses in April.
AIA San Francisco is offering ARE webinars for just $5 for AIA members.
Emerge AIAU  is offering free courses, including HSW/LUs so, you can continue to log AXP hours from the comfort of your home.

Research has consistently shown giving makes us far happier and thus could be the perfect antidote to stressful situation. Your community needs you. Consider donating money or help deliver goods to families in need with the Maryland Food Bank or Meals on Wheels. You can also support our future architects by loaning a computer or laptop to an architecture student at Morgan State University’s School of Architecture during this pandemic. To find how you can contribute to this drive, please email the AIA Students organization (AIAS) at MorganState@AIAS.org.

With over 1,300 architects, emerging professionals, and allied industry members, your AIA Baltimore chapter continues to provide numerous opportunities for professional development and mentorship. Knowing where to find resources and guidelines is a first step in staving off hardships.

All your efforts in professional development and career goals would be futile if, in the end, you don’t take care of your health and well-being. Keep a regular morning routine, this should help you jump back into the swing of things when the stay-at-home is lifted. While still having a busy workday remember to eat well and find time to stay active.
