Dear Members,
I am delighted to share with you a recap of the recent AIA Annual Conference, a highlight in our calendar that brought together some of the brightest minds in architecture to exchange ideas, celebrate achievements, and set the stage for the future of our profession.
First, I would like to extend my congratulations to Quinn Evans, who was honored with the Firm of the Year Award. This prestigious recognition is a testament to their exceptional contributions to architecture and their unwavering commitment to excellence. I hope you had a chance to see a lecture and hear about their work – projects located in Baltimore were highlighted. Their work continues to inspire us all.
During the conference, our larger organization placed a significant emphasis on leadership. We are witnessing transformative ideas and innovative strategies aimed at equipping architects with the skills needed to lead effectively in our rapidly evolving industry and looking to bring more participants into the organization. These initiatives are designed to foster growth and resilience, ensuring that we are well-prepared to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.
One of the conference’s keynote speakers, Arthur C. Brooks’ talk on happiness resonated with me. His thought-provoking address reminded me of the importance of well-being and fulfillment in our personal and professional lives. He asked us all to evaluate why we may seek only pleasure for pleasure’s sake, and instead asked us to seek enjoyment, satisfaction and meaning as a way to get closer to true lasting happiness. As architects, creating spaces that enhance happiness and well-being is central to our mission, and his message resonated deeply with our values.
Looking forward, AIA Baltimore has several events planned for the summer. There is a discussion on Permeable Surfaces and Stormwater Management and AIA + ASLA Happy Hour at Ministry of Brewing both on July 17th, followed by a tour of the Hippodrome Theatre and Emerging Professionals Happy Hour at Design Collective, both on July 23rd. Additionally, the board will be starting our strategic planning efforts. Every three years your AIA Baltimore Board discusses the direction of the chapter and how to get there. In the coming months, members will receive surveys inviting you all to contribute to our strategic planning. Your feedback is invaluable in shaping the direction of AIA Baltimore. We want to hear from you: What should our focus be over the next three years? How can we better support your growth as an architect, bolster your business, and enhance the community we live in and serve?
Additionally, if you are interested in joining the board, please contact us. We are always looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to help guide our organization and contribute to its success. Your participation and input are crucial as we strive to create a thriving, supportive, and forward-thinking architectural community. Thank you for your continued dedication and involvement.
Warm regards,
Ryan Jordan Pfarr, AIA
2024 President, AIA Baltimore
