The jury appreciated the very clean and simple design of this adaptive reuse of a former industrial building into a furniture showroom. The jury also loved the spatial complexity inside. This project considered every surface and detail throughout the space. The exposed and dropped ceilings are used very effectively to articulate work zones. The selective concealing and revealing of the existing structure is extremely successful on this project. This is interior architecture at its best – a merger of space-making, careful detailing, color, and furnishings

The jury commented that it is no easy task to accomplish LEED Platinum in the adaptation of a large former tobacco warehouse to a healthcare research and education facility. The jury commended this project as a wonderful example of adaptive reuse at the highest level of sustainable recognition.

The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy Washington Monument Restoration

Baltimore, MD
This project is a complicated technical restoration and is well-documented. The story and the project are presented very well, demonstrating the care that the team took with the restoration. The lighting highlights the monument really well too. These kinds of historic preservation projects are really important, and this is very sensitively done.

Forum Auditorium

The jury appreciated the restoration of this beautiful auditorium, and particularly its use of color and material. The meticulous attention to the restoration of every surface preserved a wonderful space for generations to come. Like a great restoration must, this great space looks like it did when it originally opened. The design gods are smiling that this building was lovingly restored. Bravo!

The jury appreciated the simplicity and understated quality of this project. A great example of “less is more”. The level of restraint is commendable and the small connector skyway is a wonderful and unexpected surprise. It simply looks like an inspiring and high-functioning place to study art. This project offers a nice juxtaposition between the historic, warehouse/industrial aesthetic with simple and contemporary detailing. The interiors are open, light-filled spaces that have a great collaborative vibe.

The jury commented that the design offers simplicity and restraint for a makers lab. It has an industrial quality without being too design-y. The furniture and equipment blend really well with the overall aesthetic. Every detail was thought about, like the multi-colored peg board. The display corridor is very nice, as are the color palette and materials. Often these are spaces that are un-designed, and difficult to make look good.

The jury appreciated the architect’s restraint in allowing the original character of the building and structure to be maintained. There is a real sense of light and openness inside the building. The spacious, light-filled open office floor plan would be a wonderful place to work. The playful use of color and collaborative spaces throughout offer a fresh yet respectful approach to the design.

This project took a space that was unredeeming at the starting point, and transformed it into a nice work environment. The connecting stair, use of glass and stainless steel details add to the openness of the space. Color is used rather sparingly but in an effective way to highlight important elements within the office space.

Southwest Partnership Master Plan

This master plan engages multiple communities with five big ideas. If offers an interesting framework and way of thinking. This looks like a real community visualization: someone in the community could look at this and get excited about a different future envisioned and use it as a platform for change. The graphic presentation and renderings and what they’re communicating back to the community are commendable.

This project demonstrates that Good Design is Good Business through the interaction among the client and designers, in particular through the effectiveness of the student-designed spaces. The jury commended this project for articulating its mission, and how it lifted up the environment for the students. It feels as if the students own these spaces, which means it achieved its goal. The design warms up the school’s spaces through color and materials, is embracing and welcoming, and evokes a sense of community and togetherness. The message that “the environment is the third teacher” is embodied well in this project, and provides an outstanding example for other schools.

Whole Foods Architects: MV+A Architects
Baltimore, MD
The jury commented that the Rouse Company Building effectively repurposed a corporate headquarters into a multi-tenant building with a large chain grocery store. It is a good example of a sensitive adaptive-use which retains the essence of the original building, and carries this into the new design. The jury appreciated the massing and articulation of the addition, and how the new design reinforces the relationship of the building to the lake.

Matthew Kreilich, AIA, LEED AP, Snow Kreilich Architects
Matthew Kreilich, AIA, is a principal of Snow Kreilich Architects. He is the heart of the firm’s collaborative working model with an active participation in both strategic and detail design resolution. Matthew provides his design insight into all of the firm’s project designs, as well as acting as the project designer on the studios’ most significant recent projects, including the Land Ports of Entry in Warroad Minnesota and Van Buren Maine, creative offices for KNOCK, the award winning Target Plaza Commons, and Brunsfield North Loop Apartments. Matthew ‘s commitment is to provide clients with high-performance design that meets functional requirements. His work is pragmatic yet elegant and refined, and executed well within the project’s cost and schedule restraints in a energetic, smooth and gratifying design process.
Matthew’s design leadership and experience continue to be recognized both locally and nationally. Matthew was honored with the 2009 AIA National Young Architect Award for outstanding design leadership. Locally, his work has received several AIA Minnesota Honor Awards. Matthew is also the recipient of the prestigious Ralph Rapson Traveling Study Fellowship. He has lead studios at the University of Minnesota and participated in reviews at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and at Washington University St Louis. Matt has participated on a number of professional juries including AIA Philadelphia, AIA Colorado and AIA Kansas. He has presented Snow Kreillich Architects work at the 2009 and 2010 AIA National conferences as well at the AIA American Academy of Justice 2010 conference.
Thomas Meyer, FAIA, Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle Ltd
A founding principal of MSR with 43 years’ experience, Tom is well-known for designing new and reuse projects in historic settings, such as the Mill City Museum complex (recognized with an AIA Honor Award for Architecture, The National Trust for Historic Preservation Honor Award, and The Waterfront Center’s Excellence on the Waterfront Top Honors). His career is threaded with a strong interest in the correlation between old and new architecture both in new projects and in renovations and additions. This focus has resulted in work with historic district planning, building rehabilitation and restoration, and adaptive reuse projects, as well as new construction in historic districts, residences, museums, and interpretive centers.
Tom taught design at the University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture for 25 years and was the first recipient of the Ralph Rapson Award for Distinguished Teaching. In 2012, he received a University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award. He is currently a member of the University of Minnesota’s College of Design Advisory Board, a trustee of the Mississippi River Fund, a member of the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership, and a member of the Viking Stadium Implementation Committee. Tom was elected into the AIA College of Fellows in 2006 and is past president of AIA Minnesota. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota.
Joan M. Soranno, FAIA, HGA Architects and Engineers
Joan M. Soranno, FAIA, is an award-winning architect specializing in cultural and religious architecture as Vice President/Design Principal at HGA in Minneapolis. With colleague John Cook, FAIA, she has created a small in-house design studio that serves as an incubator for innovative design in which her projects are aesthetically driven and technically challenging.
Among her works are a new Entry Pavilion for Walker Art Center scheduled for a Fall 2015 groundbreaking in Minneapolis; five musician cottages for the renowned Marlboro Music Festival in Marlboro, Vermont; Lakewood Cemetery Garden Mausoleum in Minneapolis, which won the 2014 AIA Honor Award for Architecture; and Bigelow Chapel for the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in New Brighton, Minnesota, which won the 2006 AIA Honor Award for Architecture.
Joan has presented at leading design forums, and has served as a juror for national awards programs, including the 2013 Progressive Architecture (PA) Awards and the AIA Chicago Honor Awards. She has been published in The New York Times, Architectural Record, AIArchitect, and ARCHITECT. Soranno has a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Notre Dame, and is a member of the GSA Design Excellence Program-National Peer.
