BALTIMORE, MD (February 16, 2017 – Wohlsen Construction’s recent project, the Baltimore Visitor Center, was awarded the national Best of the Best Small Project by Engineering News-Record (ENR) on January 28.
The contest began at the regional level where the Baltimore Visitor Center was selected ENR MidAtlantic’s Best Regional Small Project. From here, the submission advanced to the national competition along with the winners from ENR’s nine other regions. It was then selected as the best of the best in terms of teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation, and quality.
Exemplary of the spirit of small projects, the renovation was recognized for its seemingly sizeable scope despite the project’s tight budget and schedule. Ayers Saint Gross designed the renovations to increase the functionality of the space. Moveable displays and interactive LED touchscreens create a scenic and interactive informational center for the Inner Harbor’s 11 million annual tourists. Through a quick conversion process, the space transforms into a state-of-the-art event venue with a controllable LED lighting system, illuminating the striking steel and glass sculpture suspended from the ceiling.
